$15 for 15 Babies: Two students strive to impact the futures of Honduran infants

Unable to care for their newborn children, Honduran families often abandon them on the side of the road. Honduran orphanages take in as many children as possible, but they are struggling to support them all. With being the second poorest country in Central America, Honduran government is struggling to provide the necessary funds to orphanages around the country. As of 2016, the Honduran government is cutting their funding for orphanages nationwide. This, unfortunately, has affected the orphanage that Buena Vida Coffee supports, Sociedad Amigos de los Niños (SAN). However, two ambitious young ladies, Claire Spech and Mary D’Angelo, have made it their mission to help provide these funds.

It all started with a mission trip down to SAN two years ago, and this past July, the two of them fell in love with the children at the orphanage in Nuevo Paraiso. They cared for the 15 new babies that SAN had taken in since January 2015. Each baby had a different story of neglect and abandonment that inspired Claire and Mary to start a fundraiser through Crowdrise. “$15 for 15 Babies” started about a month ago, and as of Sept. 11, they have raised $8,457. With a goal of raising $10,000, they want to provide the orphanage with diapers, formula, medical care, food, etc. The namesake of the campaign came from the idea that if 667 people each donated $15, they would reach their goal of $10,000. Regardless of the amount you donate, every single dollar will help a child in need.

All these donations will directly benefit SAN. Sociedad Amigos de los Niños promises to take care of orphaned children from newborn to 18 years-old. Currently, Nuevo Paraiso supports and shelters 150 children, and each of them need your help to live a healthy life.

As donations are received, they are directly sent to the orphanage to provide their children with the necessities of life. This is made possible by Friends of Honduran Children, an organization we work closely with in Indiana.

Although they are back in the United States, Claire and Mary left their hearts back in Nuevo Paraiso with the Honduran children. During the school year, Claire and Mary spend their time studying at Ohio State University and University of Michigan respectively. Even though they cannot be with their friends in Honduras, they continue to raise awareness of their cause through social media, emails, and even through their universities. They are overwhelmed with the amount of support everyone has given them, and they want to continue their efforts in supporting their Honduran friends.

  • I am not sure of the best way to contact you but I LOVED your book, God Knows My Size and wntead to include a summary of it in a Sunday School lesson I am writing on God’s provision for us. I write upper elementary curriculum for Randall House Publishing and think kids will love the story. What would I need to do to include it? Thanks, Sandy
